The 2018 VW Passat will come this year without any changes on its exterior design. It was refreshed with 2016 – year model and we can expect only some changes inside the cabin. That could include some features standard on all models, which are now available only with higher trims.
The 2018 Passat is a midsize sedan and it is placed in a segment above the compact Jetta. With two gas engines the new Passat comes with more capacious interior than competition. This includes vehicles like Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima and Hyundai Sonata.
2018 VW Passat redesign
Exterior styling of the current model of Passat was refreshed with 2016 – year model. Then Passat got a new hood, front and rear bumpers, front grille and front fenders. The 2018 VW Passat will come with new trunklid and with LED headlights and taillights. Headlights are going to be slimmer and with four-bar grille it will get dignified attitude.
Just like the current model, the next generation of Passat will be also available with R-Line version. It is going to feature a stylized front bumper with black details, sole rocker panels, 19-inch alloy wheels and reshaped rear diffuser. However, all models are going to be available in eight exterior colors: Reflex Silver Metallic, Deep Black Perl, Pure White, Platinum Gray Metallic, Fortana Red Metallic, Reef Blue Metallic, Titanium Beige Metallic and Urano Gray.
There are four trim levels for the 2018 VW Passat but they are also available with technology packages. This list includes base S trim, SE, SEL and sporty R – Line. High quality materials are included inside the cabin. Two large gauges are noticeable behind the wheel, while center stack will be equipped with new infotainment system. This MIB II (“Modular Infotainment Platform”) offers touchscreen display for all models.
Some models are available with capacitive touch screen which enables swiping and zooming with better response times than the resistive touchscreens. Car-Net system is going to be a part of infotainment and it offers the three main platforms for smartphone connectivity: Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink.
When it comes to safety, the 2018 Passat will come with full list of passive and active safety features and also driver assistance systems. All Passat models will be available with Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, Intelligent Crash Response System and Seven stability – enhancing systems such as Electronic Brake – pressure Distribution and Electronic Stability Control. Depending on chosen trim level, new Passat will be available with driver assistance systems, such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Parking Steering Assist with rearview cameras, Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking.
2018 Passat specs
There are two powertrains available with new 2018 Passat. All will be able only with petrol engines and with front wheel drive system. All wheel drive system is not going to be even as an option, while 2.0-liter diesel powertrain is currently suspended because emissions cheating scandal. First, smaller engine, is 1.8-liter turbocharged inline-4 with direct injection. It produces 170 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Mated to 6-speed automatic transmission it has fuel economy rated at 23 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.
Second, bigger, engine is 3.6-liter VR6 V6 engine with 280 horses and 258 lb-ft of torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed twin-clutch direct-shift transmission (DSG). When it comes to fuel consumption for this VR6 powerplant, it should be rated around 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.
2018 VW Passat price and release date
Price tag of the 2018 VW Passat should start around $22,500 for base S trim while sporty R-Line is going to start just under $24,000. Release date is not set yet, but we can expect it in last months of 2017.
